Sean Payton is done delegating. The Denver Broncos head coach confirmed the team is making a change offensively, taking over the play-calling from offensive coordinator Davis Webb.
Ari Meirov (@MySportsUpdate): Just in: #Broncos HC Sean Payton is taking over offensive play-calling duties from OC Davis Webb, he announced today.
It is the second coaching shakeup of the week around the league — Houston's DeMeco Ryans took over the Texans' defensive play-calling after an 0-4 start, and Payton is now doing the same on offense for Denver. Payton, who announced the move Thursday, said he will call the plays himself.
Webb had been handling the play-calling duties through the first four weeks of the season as the offense worked to find traction. Payton's decision follows a stretch in which Denver has lacked consistency on that side of the ball, and the head coach — one of the NFL's most experienced offensive minds — stepping in signals the urgency of the change. The move was described Thursday as a complex situation for Webb, who had opportunities to become a play-calling coordinator elsewhere during the offseason before returning to Denver.
