San Francisco shuffled three roster spots around one injury on Wednesday. The 49ers placed tight end Jake Tonges on injured reserve with an MCL injury, promoted receiver KhaDarel Hodge to the 53-man roster, and signed tight end Jack Stoll to the practice squad.
Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet): The #49ers promoted WR KhaDarel Hodge to the 53-man roster and placed TE Jake Tonges (MCL) on injured reserve. They also signed TE Jack Stoll to practice squad.
The Hodge promotion and Stoll signing were reported earlier in the day, and the Tonges designation completes the picture: the 49ers lose a tight end for at least four weeks and backfill with a promoted receiver and a veteran practice-squad tight end. Hodge had been a practice-squad elevation last week, so his move to the active roster is a natural next step, while Stoll, a former Eagles undrafted free agent who played 15 games for New Orleans last season, gives San Francisco immediate depth at the position.
Combined with rookie receiver De'Zhaun Stribling's move to injured reserve with an ankle injury, it has been a busy week of roster churn for a team already managing several health questions.
