Brock Purdy is expected to play Thursday night, and the 49ers quarterback told ESPN's Jordan Fowler this week that he's prepared to lean on his legs more this season if the situation calls for it.
Jordan Fowler (@JFowlerESPN): With Brock Purdy expected to play tonight, he told me at camp recently that he’s prepared to use his mobility more this year if needed. “I’m never going to be a 4.4 guy, 4.5 guy,” he said. “The thing I pride myself on is moving quickly, moving the chains when I need 10, 12 yards. I think I can add that for our offense, for sure. Not looking for that kind of stuff, but being able to fall back when those moments happen, like, ‘alright dude, I have the legs to do this, the mobility to do this, the athleticism.’…As I get older, I want to maintain that.”
Purdy was clear about his limits as a runner — "I'm never going to be a 4.4 guy, 4.5 guy" — but said the part of his game he prides himself on is moving quickly and moving the chains when the offense needs 10 or 12 yards. He framed the mobility as a fallback weapon rather than a calling card: the ability to say, in the moment, "alright dude, I have the legs to do this, the mobility to do this, the athleticism."
Notably, Purdy tied the willingness to run to longevity, saying that as he gets older he wants to maintain that element of his game. If San Francisco's offense asks more of him on the ground in 2026, it will be by design rather than duress.
